Yiming Yang (b. 1995) is an
installation and new media artist based in Shanghai. Her work advances the
post-Anthropocene perspective by combining organisms (plants, animals, and
humans), everyday objects, and machines to explore how these symbiotic
relations interact to shape human subjectivities and psychologies. Yiming
employs technology to construct simulacra of living entities, aiming to
establish new communication channels between machinery and organisms. Her
surreal and ethereal environments invite audiences to reflect on the
relationship between virtuality and reality, technology, and religion.

Yiming is currently the owner of Yimin Art
Technology Co., Ltd. She holds an MA in Information Experience Design from the
Royal College of Art (2020). She has exhibited at “All Realms Civilization, The
1st Annual METAVERSE Art @VENICE”, Venice (2022); “The Magnetic Field”,
Himalayas Museum, Shanghai (2021); “New View”, Shibuya Parco, Tokyo (2021); “Ircam
Forum”, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2020); and “Re-narrating the Collection”, Tate
Modern (2017).

She was a resident at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart in 2023, Shanghai Jiao Tong
University’s ICCI Art Valley Program in 2022 and The Swatch Art Peace Hotel,
Shanghai in 2021.Email: yangyiming0321@foxmail.com

	All Seeing Eyes

2023

Stainless steel, building materials

Commissioned by

Aranya

This installation used metal parts to build a futuristic eye structure, climbing on the black box container, peeking out at people
and things on the beach. It is a boundary that separates virtual from physical, internal from external. The artist builds this
outwardly extending eye to explore the topic of epistemology, to observe the growth and changes of the surrounding
environment, and to understand the similarities and differences between the material world it sees and our inner understanding.

Replica
Machine

2023

Plastic tubes, stainless steel,
wood

Commissioned by JOYCE BEAUTY

Replica
Machine
is an installation consisting of several sets of horse legs. It
deconstructs and reconstructs the form of an organic life entity to depict an
organic process that constantly renews itself. From image editing to gene
editing, technological progress enables us to alter and reshape life. Such
progress also brings about new challenges, prompting reflection on the relevant
ethical issues. The work explores the complex relations between organisms and
their surroundings by representing the dynamism that arises from technological
iteration.

Layered
City

2023

Plastic tubes, concrete, stainless
steel

Commissioned by JOYCE BEAUTY

Layered City is an installation
that assembles readymade industrial parts to create a miniature model of a
future city complex that continuously renews itself.

Inspired by the Japanese
architectural movement Metabolism, active in the 1960s, Layered City draws on
the idea of an incessant exchange of energy and matter between organisms and
the exterior environment to emphasize renewal and regeneration. The sculpture's
horse image serves as the city's iconic statue and spiritual symbol,
referencing popular car logos of the time and representing an insatiable desire
for technological possibilities.

The sculpture's round-angle forms
symbolize the advancements of industrial technologies. Comparing the city in
the form of a sculptural installation to an organic ensemble, Layered City
depicts its organic form as perpetually changing, fluid, and adaptable. The
work invites viewers to reflect on the interplay between the natural and the
technological and to consider the impact of these forces on the evolution of
cities and society.

Regenerative
Orchids

Plastic pipes, stainless steel, Arduino

2022

The installation is a breathing
device derived from the form of an orchid. Orchids are rich in species and
individual variation, and the orchids here symbolize the sexual deception of a
species that perpetuates its genes. The liquid that breathes makes artifacts
and technology seem alive, a manifestation of organic life to inorganic life,
nurturing its status as a species rather than an object.

Star
Fete

Bamboo pavilion

2021

The original shape of this bamboo pavilion is a star-shaped homophone and a five-pointed star, dedicated to ancestors and praying for peace and new life. The artist reflects on our relationship with nature, the environment and the culture through her own experiences and village culture. It shows the ideologies of the elderly in the village, and they subconsciously use language as a tool to attack the arrival of outsiders, just like spikes, which is another kind of self-protection state. At the same time, it explores how to approach the culture of the locals in the form of public art.

Splice

Stainless steel, plastic tubes, air pump,
electronic components

2020

The installation is an
audience-controlled interactive robot, with a performer leading the experience.

The process of mRNA splicing
pertains to the cutting and pasting pieces of our cells’ information
transmission codes. Splice enmeshes a human organism with a robotic body,
thereby generating a cyborg, without interfering with genetics. Spiders
perceive sound through their legs, and this project enquired as to what would
occur if we built on human perception via technology, incorporating a human
within a synthetic creature.

What is a biological body? The
point at which a human and a robot are infused into a coherent and
indistinguishable entity – a cyborg – may comprise the last stage of
evolutionary development. The realisation of such an entity as an
evolutionary conclusion may produce emancipation from a range of social
inequities, countering gender, race. and sexual inequality.

This installation challenges common
notions of the interlinks between and among human nature, the natural world,
and technology. It also explores the ways that these interlinks impact on our
subjectivity and our psyche. It creates a post-human, cyborg-driven scenario
set in a transcendent, non-specific time in the future, in which we will be
able to select our own organic bodies thanks to technological innovation.
